Your Skin, Your most powerful ally for good health

Your skin

Your skin is a living organ that surrounds and protects you. It fulfils vital functions for the general health of your organism – including temperature regulation, melanin production and fluid storage.

It is an organ that is both internal and external. It can be damaged by outside environmental factors such as the sun’s rays and pollution. However it can also suffer internal diseases or changes that originate in its own tissues.

The layers of the skin

The epidermis, this is the layer that is in contact with the outside, and it is made up of layers of cells. The most abundant of these cells are keratinocytes (which make keratin) and melanocytes (which protect us from solar radiation).

Under the epidermis is the dermis, where the nerve endings and sweat glands are located.

And lastly is the hypodermis or subcutaneous tissue, which essentially is made up of fat.

How does your skin work?

Your skin also fulfils another very important function: your appearance.

This is essential for your self-esteem and sense of self-worth. Looking good, and being comfortable and in harmony with the way you look is essential to feeling good, both about yourself and your surroundings.

Skin types

Your skin is vulnerable

Your skin is specially designed to receive, withstand and protect you from environmental stressors, thanks to its prodigious renewing capability. But even so, there are factors that weaken it and reduce its regenerative capacity.

Skin disorders

If you don’t care for your skin properly, chronic disorders can develop, leading to disease.
